Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting not only physical health but also psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. Coping strategies are crucial in reducing distress and improving the quality of life of cancer patients during treatment. This study was undertaken with a view to develop an information booklet by assessing the coping strategies adopted by cancer patients admitted to selected cancer hospitals of Gujarat State. A descriptive survey design was employed. A structured checklist of 40 items was administered to 250 patients across four hospitals in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot. The results showed that 62.40% of patients had good coping strategies, 36.80% had very good coping strategies, and 0.80% had average coping strategies, while none had poor coping strategies. Significant associations were found between coping strategies and demographic variables such as age, marital status, and education, while no association was observed with gender, type of cancer, family history, food habit, or type of family. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening coping mechanisms through educational and supportive interventions. An information booklet was prepared with a view to improve coping among cancer patients.
