The Indian payment industry, regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and supported by the National Payments Corporation of India, has witnessed a major transformation from traditional cash-based systems to digital payment platforms such as UPI, cards, mobile wallets, and internet banking. This study examines the adoption and usage intensity of digital payment systems among businesses in selected districts of the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The study is descriptive and analytical in nature, based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from 100 business respondents, including retail shops, service units, and small enterprises, using a structured questionnaire. The analysis employs statistical tools such as percentages, mean scores, and standard deviation to evaluate awareness, adoption status, usage patterns, and determinants influencing digital payment adoption.
The findings reveal that a majority of businesses have a high level of awareness (58%) and more than half (54%) have fully adopted digital payment systems. UPI emerges as the most preferred method (82%), followed by cards and mobile wallets. Daily usage of digital payments by 61% of respondents indicates their deep integration into business operations. Ease of use, customer demand, and awareness are identified as the major determinants influencing adoption, while infrastructure limitations and security concerns act as barriers.
The study concludes that digital payments significantly enhance efficiency, transparency, and customer satisfaction in business operations. It provides useful insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and business stakeholders to promote sustainable digital payment adoption and strengthen India’s transition towards a cashless economy.
