Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has emerged as one of the most important rural development programmes in India by providing guaranteed wage employment and promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities in rural areas. The present study examines the role of MGNREGA in employment generation, asset creation, and financial progress in Andhra Pradesh during the period from FY 2022–23 to FY 2026–27. The study is based on a descriptive research design and utilizes secondary data collected from government reports, official MGNREGA portals, research articles, and publications related to rural development.

The findings reveal that MGNREGA significantly contributed to rural employment generation by creating large-scale person-days of work and providing livelihood security to rural households. The programme showed strong participation of women, Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (STs), thereby promoting social inclusion and economic empowerment. The study further indicates that a substantial number of durable assets such as farm ponds, irrigation canals, roads, plantations, and water conservation structures were created under the programme, supporting agricultural productivity and rural infrastructure development. Financial analysis shows efficient fund utilization, increasing wage rates, and successful implementation of electronic fund management systems ensuring transparency in wage payments.

However, the study also identifies certain implementation challenges, including declining employment intensity in recent years, reduced household participation, delays in wage payments, and administrative constraints. Despite these issues, MGNREGA continues to play a vital role in strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting inclusive rural development in Andhra Pradesh. The study concludes that improved planning, timely fund release, and strengthened monitoring mechanisms are necessary to enhance the long-term effectiveness of the programme.
