This article looks at the advantages and disadvantages of digitization in mental health, particularly in areas of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. It reflects developments in recent times, evidence informed practice and a responsible vision for the future of technologies in supporting mental health needs. The article concludes with an introduction to the TEQUILA framework, which spells out specific critical needs to support a virtuous and productive future for digital mental health. This includes developing trust in robust data privacy, security, and transparency in AI decision-making; establishing evidence-based practices to ensure quality and regulatory control; designing AI technologies that fulfil a range of user needs; developing user needs and desires; and ensuring liability and accreditation framework for AI use.
