Pingala, an ancient Indian scholar from the 3rd century BCE, is celebrated as a forerunner in mathematical thought, especially in the realms of binary numbers, combinatorics, and prosody. His seminal work, the Chandahsutra, though primarily a treatise on Sanskrit prosody (metrics), lays the foundation for several important mathematical ideas. This paper explores Pingala’s biography, his mathematical insights, and his long-lasting influence on both Indian and global mathematics.
