Abstract: Women’s empowerment has become a central concern in the socio-economic development agenda of many countries. In India, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as an effective mechanism for promoting financial inclusion, poverty alleviation, and social empowerment among women. SHGs are small voluntary associations of individuals, primarily women, who come together to save regularly, access credit, and undertake income-generating activities. This study examines the role of Self-Help Groups in empowering women by enhancing their economic independence, social status, decision-making abilities, leadership qualities, and participation in community development. The study relies on secondary data collected from books, journals, government reports, and research articles. Findings indicate that SHGs significantly contribute to improving women’s access to financial resources, entrepreneurial opportunities, and social networks. Participation in SHGs increases self-confidence, awareness of rights, and involvement in family and community decisions. SHGs also facilitate skill development, literacy, and collective action against social injustices. However, challenges such as inadequate training, limited market access, lack of managerial skills, and dependence on external support continue to affect their effectiveness. The study concludes that SHGs play a vital role in promoting women’s empowerment and sustainable development. Strengthening institutional support, capacity building, financial literacy, and market linkages can further enhance the impact of SHGs. The research highlights the need for policy interventions and collaborative efforts among government agencies, financial institutions, and non-governmental organizations to maximize the potential of SHGs in achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment.
