A proper education opens up new opportunities for a rewarding career and ensures the future of a sustainable nation. In today's world, technology is changing rapidly, and digital technology represents the systematic use of science and technology in the current education system. It provides standardized and globally recognized quality education and influences digital platforms for higher education in India. Online and digital education platforms are flexible and easily accessible around the clock, without strict schedules or time tables for students. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, introduced by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), is developing various digital initiatives and showing a positive attitude towards ICT-based education, such as smart mobile phones, laptops, computers, and tablets. Approved by the Union Cabinet on 29 July 2020, the NEP 2020 promotes online and digital learning across all aspects of education. The emphasis on digital technologies by NEP 2020 and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can play a significant role in supporting higher education. The use of digital technologies in all areas of higher education and teacher education has made a very important contribution in India. This paper focuses on NEP 2020 and its provision of using ICT, quality online platforms, and global standard digital infrastructures in education. The paper also aims to discuss ensuring equitable use of technology in online and digital education along with digital initiatives in higher education.
