Assessing the Digital Pedagogical Competency (DPC) of Prospective Teachers

Digital Pedagogy has been highly popularized in today’s era of modern teaching. So, teachers need to be competent in digital pedagogy. Digital Pedagogical Competency (DPC) is the ability to use digital tools in teaching. There is a need to research Digital Pedagogical Competency because there is minimal research on it. The objective of this study was to assess the level of Digital Pedagogical Competency of Prospective Teachers in the Lucknow district of Uttar Pradesh, India, and compare it with gender, locality, and study year. This study was conducted through a quantitative descriptive survey method on a sample of 80 Prospective Teachers who were selected conveniently. For the collection of data, researchers use a self-made ‘Digital Pedagogical Competency Scale (DPCS)’. The data were analyzed through Mean, Standard Deviation, Percentages, and the Mann-Whitney U Test (non-parametric test, because data were not normally distributed). It was found Prospective Teachers in the Lucknow district have an average level of Digital Pedagogical Competency. Female Prospective Teachers have a significantly higher level of DPC compared to male Prospective Teachers, urban Prospective Teachers have a significantly higher level of DPC compared to rural Prospective Teachers, and there is no significant difference between 2nd and 4th semester Prospective Teachers in the level of DPC in Lucknow district. The findings of this study have important implications for teacher education curriculum, institutional practices, and help to teachers, educators, policymakers, and curriculum planners to take initiatives aligned with contemporary educational reforms.
