ABSTRACT
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) stands as one of India’s pre-eminent rural development interventions, designed to secure livelihood opportunities while catalyzing environmentally and socially sustainable growth in village economies. This paper assesses the socio-economic impacts of MGNREGA in Karimnagar District from 2020 to 2025, focusing on two key pillars of the programme: the development of community assets and the creation of employment opportunities. The analysis reviews the programme’s effectiveness in augmenting rural infrastructure, generating wage work, and contributing to poverty alleviation at the district level. It also identifies implementation gaps and translates lessons into policy recommendations that aim to enhance outcomes. Overall, the findings indicate notable advances in rural infrastructure—especially roads and water conservation structures—alongside substantial employment provision. Yet, persistent constraints remain regarding the timeliness of fund flow, the upkeep and longevity of assets, and the equitable inclusion of marginalized social groups. The paper concludes with a set of actionable recommendations to deepen impact through targeted investments in maintenance, better financial management, year-round work planning, and stronger community engagement.
