Sardar Patel’s Dream for Self-Sufficiency: Exploring Potentials and Hurdles in Barpeta’s Cane and Bamboo Handicraft

His strategy for economic growth was to maximize production by optimum use of industrial capacity of the country. To him, increase industrial production not only fulfills the needs of the consumers but also save import costs of the country. Along with the big industries, he favoured the small and handicrafts which can provide large scale of employment.
Handicrafts express the rich tradition and cultural heritage of any society. They are the part and parcel of the rural economy of Assam, India. Assam is rich in handicrafts including handloom, sericulture, cane and bamboo, carpentry, brass and bell-metal crafts, catering, tailoring, dressmaking, beauty culture, pottery and furniture making etc. In terms of natural resources, Cane and bamboo resources of different species are abundantly found in the state and thus has prospect of this cane and bamboo based handicrafts. Being a labour intensive industry, it has high prospect to absorb people and thus can reduce the number of unemployment and helps in mitigating the problems of poverty, rural-urban migration etc. The Present study attempts to analyze the potentiality of cane and bamboo handicraft which is measured by the economic viability of the industry. Further, the hurdles faced by the industry are also identified in the study. The study is conducted by undertaking field study in Barpeta district of Assam through structured questionnaire and analyses have been done by appropriate mathematical tools to fulfill the objectives of the study.
