Abstract: Tourism is a key contributor to employment, regional development, and cultural interchange, making it a highly dynamic industry in the global economy. However, the quick growth of tourism has led to an increase in environmental issues and sustainability, especially in mountainous areas with delicate ecosystems. Due to their breathtaking scenery, rich cultural legacy, and developing tourism infrastructure, Himalayan destinations have seen a significant rise in visitor numbers over the past ten years. Local communities have benefited economically from tourism expansion, but it has also increased environmental stresses such trash production, water scarcity, traffic jams, and habitat damage.

This study examines the dynamics of sustainable tourism development in selected Himalayan destinations, focusing on environmental challenges and policy implications. The study uses a mixed-method approach that includes secondary tourism data analysis, stakeholder interviews, and surveys of tourists. Shimla, Manali, and Leh are examples of case study locations that are well-known tourist sites in the Himalayan region. The results show that while tourism plays a major role in local economic growth and job creation, unchecked tourist expansion has put a great deal of strain on infrastructure and environmental resources. In order to preserve natural balance in alpine locations, the study emphasizes the significance of sustainable tourist planning, community involvement, and efficient governance. In order to enhance sustainable tourism growth in Himalayan regions, reinforce destination management techniques, and encourage responsible tourism activities, the report ends with policy recommendations.
