The discussion centers on critical issues that shape the protagonist's life and the family structure as a whole, including the effects of patriarchy, tension between generations, the role of education, the complexities of motherhood, and the quest for individual identity. By closely following the main character, Virmati, on her personal journey toward achieving independence and individuality, this paper argues that Kapur offers a rich and balanced perspective on what it means to be an Indian woman, the demanding nature of family obligations, and the difficult, ongoing struggle for personal freedom. In conclusion, the novel ultimately reflects both the harsh constraints and the emerging possibilities for women within the established, traditional Indian family structure.
