Particularly they are mostly inhabited in the nothern bank of Brahmaputra valley present Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Kokrajhar, in the state of Assam. They are regarded as one of the largest tribe of Assam.¹ The generic term Bodo was first used by B.H Hodgson in 1846.² According to R.M. Nath, the Bodos are also known as "Bodo-Ficha" or "Bodo-Chha" son or children of "Bod" country or Bodo.³ As a ethnic settlers of Assam, they have their own primitive rich culture and traditions, i,e; Primitive types of cultivation, pig, poultry farming, rearing of silk-worm, fishing, hunting, wine making, house building, worshipped of "Bathouism" to"Bathou Bwrai" with planting a Sijou ( Euphorbia Splended) tree at Bathou altar as their religious beliefs and practices. This paper is an attempt to Indicate the ethnic identity of the Bodos and their rich culture and traditions.
