The crisis of values in contemporary Indian society is permeating various aspects of our lives. Despite over fifty years of advancement in numerous fields, our society continues to face a multitude of challenges, one of which is the erosion of values. This issue raises critical questions regarding our progress and the current state of our educational system, specifically concerning whether we are advancing materially, spiritually, or in both realms. The prevailing situation indicates that spiritual growth is not keeping pace with material development. The pressing question is how we can address this issue. While the roles of society and educational institutions are undeniably significant, the primary responsibility lies with teachers in fostering values. It is the teacher's character that serves as a role model for students within the school environment. Students are more likely to absorb values from their teachers than from the academic content presented to them. Therefore, there is a need for a reorientation in teacher education to address this requirement. This paper presents a rationale for value-oriented education and examines various practical challenges associated with this approach, offering suggestions for remedial actions.
